7 Signs You Might Have Eye Cataracts

Sevens Signs of Cataracts That Mean You Need an Eye Care Check-Up

Every year, U.S. eye care professionals, like our optometry team at Shippee Family Eye Care, P.C., diagnose more than 200,000 cases of cataracts. The risk of developing cataracts goes up as you get older. Nearly half of all Americans over 75 have developed this eye condition, but the risk starts growing by the age of 40.

Review these seven common symptoms to learn if you or a loved one may soon need to see an eye doctor in Lancaster, St. Johnsbury, or Montpelier for a cataract diagnosis.

1. Cloudy Vision

Cataracts cloud your eye lenses, affecting your vision. This condition often causes blurred, cloudy, or obscured vision. Things may also appear dim or darker than normal.

2. Color Contrast Issues

Colors may appear faded or yellowed, and it can be hard to see sharp color contrasts when you’re looking through cloudy lenses.

3. Halos

Cataracts distort the light that enters your eyes. This often causes a halo effect around streetlights, automobile headlights, and other light sources. This is more common at night.

4. Double Vision

The changes to your eye lens may cause you to see two images of one object. These images frequently appear to overlap.

5. Light Sensitivity

Bright lights, both natural and artificial, may cause watery eyes and discomfort. There’s more glare from lamps and headlights. Additionally, you might need to shield your eyes more often and even wear sunglasses indoors.

6. Night Vision Problems

The light distortion, blurry vision, double vision, and halos caused by cataracts makes it especially difficult to see at night. It may also take more time for your eyes to adjust when you move from a well-lit room to a dark area.

7. Vision Prescription Changes

As your cataracts progress, your vision is likely to worsen, which can lead to more frequent changes in your eyewear prescriptions.
