The Importance of Eye Care and Check Ups

Keeping your eyes healthy can get a little tricky. It is commonly misunderstood that eye exams just mean reading a few letters on a chart. However, there is much more involved in a comprehensive eye exam. At Shippee Family Eye Care, P.C., we provide top-notch treatment for patients of all ages. If you live in or around Lancaster, St. Johnsbury, Montpelier, or Littleton, contact our team today to schedule an appointment with one of our eye doctors.

What Is Involved in Check-Ups

Visiting an optometrist is essential because your eyes change over time. Our eye care professionals can help with many needs, some of which include the following:

  • Getting fitted for contact lenses or glasses
  • Diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions
  • LASIK surgery pre and post-care
  • Pediatric eye exams

A comprehensive eye exam includes testing for several eye diseases that can compromise your vision. These conditions include glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts. We can also help if you suffer from more common conditions such as computer vision syndrome or dry eye.

Checkups for All Age Groups

At a minimum, our younger patients should have an exam every two years. As people age and more eye problems become common, the frequency of the eye exams becomes more important. Many of the eye conditions we have mentioned have no early warning signs. For instance, glaucoma affects nearly three million adults, but only about half know they even have it. Early detection is key to preventing further vision loss. For children who are getting ready to start school, it is important to schedule an exam with one of our eye doctors.

Most of the information presented in school is in a visual format. When children have trouble seeing, they can quickly become frustrated and fall behind in their school work. Our eye doctor keeps patients informed and recommends further steps that can be taken, whether it is a nutritional change, supplementation, or the need for additional testing.
