Shippee Family Eye Care, P.C. - blog - Ortho-K: What Is It, And How Can It Help

Even with all the advances in modern optometry, many people with vision problems are still quite happy wearing glasses and contact lenses. Others prefer a more permanent form of vision correction called LASIK that lets them put those lenses aside. But what if you don't want to wear corrective lenses during the day -- and you don't want surgery either? Your answer may lie with ortho-k, a state-of-the-art corrective technique offered here at Shippee Family Eye Care, P.C.'s offices in St. Johnsbury, Montpelier and Lancaster.

Lens-Free Daytime Vision Correction Without the Surgery

What is ortho-k? It involves the use of special contact lenses that you wear only while you're asleep. The lenses "mold" your corneas into a slightly new shape -- one that matches your corrective vision prescription. When you wake up, you can remove the lenses and see clearly all day long (or possibly even longer). You can keep the corrective effect going by wearing the lenses at night as needed. Since the effect isn't permanent, you always have the option of switching to some other answer down the road.

Myopia Control for Your Nearsighted Kids

Do any of your kids suffer from myopia (nearsightedness)? You'll be delighted to learn to ortho-k lenses have demonstrated the ability to slow the progression of this refractive error during childhood. If your child is a good candidate for ortho-k, we can discuss whether this option might help your child minimize the need for stronger corrective options later in life.
