How to Prepare for an Eye Exam

Get the Most out of Your Eye Exam by Taking the Time to Get Prepare

With locations in Lancaster, St. Johnsbury, and Montpelier, Shippee Family Eye Care, P.C. strives to make an eye exam as quick and convenient as possible.  Here is some information to get familiar with when you make an eye exam appointment with our optometrist.

Make Notes Before Coming in for Your Eye Exam

Sit down and make a list of any issues you are experiencing with your eyes.  Think of any pain, irritation, or problems with seeing clearly.  Headaches, seeing flashes of light, or problems distinguishing between colors are also important to note.  Be sure to think about when these problems are happening.  It could be good to keep a diary noting when irritation or headaches happen. That may help us to pinpoint allergies or environmental causes. If you wear any type of glasses or contacts, make sure to bring them as well, our optometrist will make sure the prescription are correct for you.

Make a list of your own health issues, allergies, medications you are taking, and any eye problems that run in your family.  Note family members who have had glaucoma, macular degeneration, or cataracts.  This will help give an idea for the eye doctor to specifically look for.  Individuals who have diabetes, hypertension, or are taking certain medications are more likely to have eye problems.  It is also a good idea to let us know if your job requires strain on your eyes or includes risks of injury.

Write down any questions that you might have for us. It can be frustrating to get home after the exam and remember all of the things you wanted to ask our optometrist.  Make sure you state the purpose of your visit and get the answers you seek.  It is better to bring up problems sooner rather than later.

Take the time to plan in advance for your eye exam at Shippee Family Eye Care, P.C. in either one of our locations, Lancaster at 603-788-3561, St. Johnsbury at 802-748-3536, or Montpelier at 802-223-7723.
