Treatment for Pink Eye

Treatment for Pink Eye With Your Lancaster, NH Optometrist

Every year, nearly 3 million cases of pink eye are reported in the United States. This common eye health condition, clinically known as conjunctivitis, is hallmarked by inflammation and infection of the inner eyelid and the outer white part of the eye (called the sclera). The classic symptoms of pink eye--which typically last from a few days for up to a few weeks--include red, itchy, irritated eyes. Excessive tearing or discharge may also lead to crustiness around the eye. It's important to remember that other eye health conditions can present with similar symptoms, so you should always visit you Lancaster optometrist for an eye exam to ensure a correct diagnosis.

Causes of pink eye include bacterial infections, viral infections, and exposure to allergens, chemicals, and smoke. Extremely contagious, pink eye can be spread from person to person if thorough hygiene, such as hand washing, is not ensured.

What Does Pink Eye Treatment Involve?

Pink eye treatment depends on what your pink eye is caused by, such as virus vs. a bacteria vs. an allergen. For instance, your eye doctor may prescribe medicated eye drops for pink eye caused by a bacterial infection, while antihistamines may help if your pink eye is caused by allergies.

Here are some other helpful hints:

• Stop wearing contact lenses until the pink eye has fully healed.

• Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes as much as possible to minimize eye irritation.

• ALWAYS wash your hands thoroughly after touching your eye area to prevent spreading.

• To relieve symptoms, put a cold compress over your eyes intermittently throughout the day.

• Avoid consuming foods that tend to promote inflammation, including processed foods, refined carbohydrates, alcohol, and dairy.
