Orthokeratology FAQ

Orthokeratology: FAQ

At Shippee Family Eye Care, we specialize in several niche areas. Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K, or Overnight Corrective Vision, is just one of many services that we offer. Let’s learn more about what this area entails and how it can affect your vision.

What is orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology is a form of treatment that attempts to fix a mishappen cornea. An Ortho-K treatment will use a special type of contact lens to reduce the refractive errors in a patient's eyes.

What is Ortho-K used for?

This form of treatment is an alternative to refractive surgery or eyewear. Orthokeratology is often used on patients with astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia. If you have been diagnosed with one of these eye conditions, mention orthokeratology as a possible option for treatment to your eye doctor.

What can I expect from orthokeratology?

During an orthokeratology session, your eye doctor may need to examine your eyes to determine the best lens prescription. Sensation wise, wearing Ortho-K lenses are similar to wearing any other type of contact lens. Most patients will experience vision correction within two weeks. Some people report vision improvement within a couple of days. While the lenses may feel uncomfortable to wear at first, over time your eyes will adjust to the feeling.

How safe is this treatment?

There is a risk of developing an eye infection, especially bacterial keratitis. That is why it's important to practice good contact lens hygiene. To maintain healthy, infection-free eyes, it's recommended that you visit an optometrist for annual eye exams.
