Do you have a teenager who wants to wear contact lenses? Bring them in to Shippee Family Eye Care to get an exam, evaluation, and fitting. We are experienced with working with children of all ages, and will do everything we can to make sure your teen's visit with us is pleasant and comfortable. We will also educate your teen on how to insert and remove contact lenses, how to keep them clean, and other proper care and hygiene habits that go with wearing lenses directly on the eyes.

Why Do Some Teenagers Need Specialty Contact Lenses?

Depending on what age your child is when they begin to wear lenses they may not be finished growing. This includes their eyes. With eyes that are still getting bigger, they will need increasingly larger prescription sizes. Specialty lenses for teens are those that are smaller than adult size lenses. They are specialty because they are make for kids.

You will need to bring your teen in twice yearly for an exam to make sure they haven't outgrown their current lens prescription size. If they have, we will measure their eye and write a prescription for a new size for them. We will also make sure they are taking care of their lenses and their eyes properly at each visit, until we are confident they are old enough and mature enough to continue doing it on their own.

Once your teen has gone a year without growing, you can be reasonably certain they have grown as large and/or tall as they will. Their eyes should not get bigger after this. We will continue to check for another year after they stop growing, just to be sure. Then, your teenager will be able to wear regular, adult-sized contact lenses going forward. The size won't change anymore, though the magnification level likely will as they get older.
